Illegal immigrants found in chemical tanker: British police
LONDON (AFP) — Police said they had arrested the driver of a chemical tanker was arrested in London Friday along with eight suspected illegal immigrants found in the back of his truck.
The eight were hospitalised with breathing difficulties after being found inside a German-registered truck in south-east London.
They are being held on suspicion of immigration offences, while the 55-year-old German driver was questioned on suspicion of people trafficking.
A 12-year-old boy and a 16-year-old boy were found inside along with five adult men and one woman.
Two of the stowaways, including a 12-year-old, were Eritrean, three were Iraqi Kurds, and the other three were Iranian, London's Metropolitan Police said.
They apparently suffered difficulty breathing as a result of gas created by the load, a powdered carbon-based chemical, said a police spokesman.
"They climbed on top of the vehicle and the ambulance turned up and they were just pulling out these people," said Lorraine Johnson, 57, a nearby resident......Article conts (-)
