Murdered black teenager Stephen Lawrence should be commemorated with a national day, his mother told MPs yesterday.

Doreen Lawrence wants the US-style honour to recognise the huge changes his killing brought about.

Stephen, 18, was stabbed at a bus stop in South London in a suspected racist attack in April 1993. None of his killers were brought to justice. But his death lead to an investigation into the Metropolitan Police by Sir William Macpherson in which he famously branded the force "institutionally racist".

His report lead to big efforts to recruit black and Asian officers and change Met culture.

Mrs Lawrence said: "Stephen's name has produced a lot of changes. What I feel would be nice is a Stephen Lawrence Day. I'm not saying we should have a public holiday but a day that recognised his name and the achievements that have come out of his name." She told the Commons Home Affairs select committee at a hearing to mark the 10th anniversary of Macpherson, that police still often assume black victims are linked to crime and treat families like witnesses not grieving relatives. continues here

Should we have a Stephen Lawrence national day?
