A contingent of 10 local and state politicians joined Rep. Raúl Grijalva, D-Ariz., in asking that Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik apologize for his comments last week that schools should check the immigration status of its students.
In a letter dated May 4, they write that they were surprised by his comments due to his long history of involvement and commitment to the community and reminded him that educating all children is the law.

“Children attending schools, regardless of their immigration status, are not the cause of our problems, nor should we publicly target them,” the letter says. “We have an obligation to protect those who cannot protect themselves. It is our responsibility to ensure that our children are always safe and secure. All children are vulnerable and we must protect them like they were our own.”

The letter also criticizes Dupnik’s assertions that 40 percent of students in Sunnyside School District are illegal and linking the source of crime to the Southside.
“These false charges are inflammatory and prejudicial. Your comments only further divide our community and debase a large part of the population,” the letter says. continues here
