Moscow. Irina Bokova became the first woman to be Director – General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), MIGNews reported. She will assume her post from Mr Koïchiro Matsuura (Japan), heading the organization from 1999. The 58 members of UNESCO’s Executive Board gave their vote for Bokova. The representative of Egypt received 27 votes.
The nomination will be submitted to the approval of the UNSECO General Conference October 6-23.
