Report: 'White flight' causes growing school segregation

White parents are pulling their children out of schools where they are outnumbered by ethnic-minority pupils, according to a report that shows increasing segregation in Britain.

The Institute of Community Cohesion (iCoCo) studied 13 areas, including Bristol, Bolton, Sunderland and Blackburn, and questioned parents.

Middle-class parents — who are usually white — were removing children from schools with growing populations of ethnic minorities because they didn’t want them to stand out, the authors of the report said.

“We heard strong evidence of ‘white flight’ in some areas,” the report said.

It concluded: “Despite the fact that most people we spoke to in focus groups wanted their children to have a mixed education, parental choice tended to push people to what they saw as the safe option, where children with similar backgrounds went.” The report also found that in areas where schools were monocultural, parents sent their child to the school dominated by pupils from their own ethnic background.

Nick Johnston, one of the authors and a policy director at the iCoCo, said that parents did not want their child to be odd ones out. “People don’t mind a diverse school but what they do mind is their kid being in a visible minority. This trend has increased in the last few years,” he said.In one school in Blackburn, once the number of non-white pupils rose above 60 per cent, white parents started saying that they did not want their children to feel different. continues here

Flight of white Britons from UK leaps to 70,000 per year ... but population still rising as Eastern Europeans come to Britain

Thousands of Britons leave our shores every year for a new life abroad, official figures show.

But although 75,000 'white British' men and women are moving away, the population is still rising because of an influx of ethnic minority groups.

According to Government estimates, the established white population of England dropped by nearly 250,000 between 2002 and 2006.

Official figures have previously indicated that about 50,000 Britons head for Australia each year and about 30,000 for New Zealand. Last year, a record 400,000 left the country to live abroad for at least 12 months.

Yesterday's estimates, which show how each ethnic group grew or diminished between 2005 and 2006, provide further evidence of so-called white flight'.

The white British population went down by 70,400 over the year through emigration. And the white Irish population fell by 4,600 because of emigration, bringing the total decline in the existing white population to 75,000.

The figures have been calculated for every year back to 2002 - and this was the biggest decline yet.

In the previous year, there had been a drop of just 42,300.

In 2004, there was a fall of 74,100. Even though there were more births than deaths, the white British and Irish population still fell by almost 15,000 in 2006.

Immigration increased the numbers in other groups, notably among those officially categorised as 'other white', including arrivals from Poland and Eastern Europe. This group grew by 70,600 in 2006.

There were also increases in the Indian, Pakistani, African and Chinese ethnic populations.

The estimates were greeted with alarm by the immigration think-tank Migration Watch.

Its chairman Sir Andrew Green said: 'The unavoidable conclusion is that the whole nature of our society will change very rapidly unless the Government moves from spin to serious action, which the vast majority of the public want to see.'

Previous surveys by officials have shown that most of those who emigrate go to Australia, New Zealand, France, Spain or the U.S.

The most popular is Australia. About 220,000 more Britons have gone to Australia than vice versa between 1996 and 2006. And 40,000 more Britons than Canadians have switched between the two countries.
Best move of our lives

Fed up with high crime, the rising cost of living and a lack of community spirit, Julie Parry and her family packed their bags and left Britain.

She and her husband Eddie, 42, sold their house in Exmouth, Devon, in 2006 and moved to the remote town of Okotoks, in Alberta, Canada, with sons Brandon, five, and Frasier, seven.

Mrs Parry, 32, said: 'Britain isn't the same country me and Eddie grew up in.

'It's just the amount of crime and the high cost of living.

'We were both working yet at the end of the month there was hardly anything left. We reached a point where we though there must be another way, so we moved.'

Going to Canada was ' probably the best thing we've ever done', she said. continues here

Middle classes leading the flight as 250,000 quit London

Nearly a quarter of a million London residents quit the city last year.

Another 200,000 left the increasingly packed and polluted South-East for lives in quieter parts of the country.

The exodus is powerful evidence of the phenomenon known in Whitehall as 'churn' - found in parts of the country where there has been both high immigration and high numbers leaving.

It has also been labelled 'white flight' after the desertion of American cities in the 1950s and 60s by whites heading for racially-segregated suburbs.

In Britain, the flight involves middle-class families of all ethnic backgrounds who are thought to be turning their backs on poor schools, poor transport, and high crime rates in major cities.

The figures, published by the ONS, found that 81,000 more people left the capital last year than arrived to live there.

However, the count of those moving in and out is based on NHS statistics for those registering for health care and with GPs and may underestimate true numbers of migrants arriving from abroad.

Many of those leaving headed towards the South-West, long a destination region for the retired, where the population grew by 28,600 over the year.

London has seen larger numbers of people leaving than new arrivals since 2001 - according to the official count. The rate of departure has held steady since 2005. continues here

Well would you live there, amongst it all, if you had the choice, of course, this should tell those in power quite strongly, the real views of whites and given that they are supposed to represent us, they should act on that, will they, I think you know the answer. Whites will keep on running, until there is no-where left to run to by then it will be too late, perhaps it is already, remember these whites are running from their capitol city, not just any city. Isn’t it time now to try nationalism, to give us just ten years of your time, ten years to turn things around, contest evil and return us to a natural state, or will you keep on relentlessly running both physically and metaphorically from the truth, the races were never meant to mix. 14
