A MAN has been arrested after a member of the British National Party was attacked with a hammer by protestors.
Dozens of people had surrounded a BNP trailer outside a pub in St Helens Road, Leigh.
Police arrived to find the trailer overturned.
Tony Ward, 48 - a member of the BNP - was hit on the head with a hammer. He was taken to hospital for treatment. Police said he was not seriously hurt.
A 25-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm.
A spokesman for GMP said officers had been called after reports of a fight.
