A VICAR yesterday appeared in court charged in relation to 180 bogus marriages to allow illegal immigrants to stay in Britain.

The Rev Alex Brown, 60, is charged with conspiring with a Ukrainian illegal immigrant to facilitate the breaching of immigration laws.

The court heard up to five sham marriages took place every day in St Leonards-on-Sea, East Sussex, over the past two years.during which his church of St Peter and St Paul is said to have had a sudden influx of African worshippers

Magistrates heard that the majority of the brides were from eastern Europe and wed non-EU nationals from Africa purely to enable them to get residency in Britain.

Mr Brown, a popular vicar in the seaside town for more than 18 years, appeared at Hastings magistrates court yesterday.

The charges relate to a period between April 2007 and June this year, during which his church of St Peter and St Paul is said to have had a sudden influx of African worshippers.

Mr Brown is also charged with one count of solemnising marriages without publishing the banns. continues here
